Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus
This vaccine contains four core viral diseases that are highly contagious between dogs, and also contains a vaccine against a bacterial disease called Leptospirosis. Younger puppies receive only DHPP. Two boosters, 3 weeks apart. Last booster should be given 15 weeks of age or older.
Bordetella
This is an oral vaccine given one time and then boostered yearly. This vaccine is for prevention against one component of the kennel cough complex. Sometimes recommended every 6 months if pet is in high exposure (daycare, grooming, play dates, etc.)
Lyme
This is a tick-borne disease that has had a significant increase in Virginia over the past 10 years. While the vaccine is not 100% effective, we consider it another layer of protection to be used in conjunction with a good quality flea and tick preventative. Two boosters, 3 weeks apart.
Rabies
This is a viral disease of mammals and can be transmitted directly to humans. All pets are required by law to be vaccinated for Rabies. Puppies receive a single vaccine at 15 to 16 weeks of age.
With the exception of Rabies, all vaccines should receive 2 boosters three weeks apart. The last booster should be given at 15 to 16 weeks of age or older. Puppies starting vaccines after this age should still receive two boosters.
We recommend that all puppies have two consecutive negative fecal samples to rule out risk of intestinal parasites. All puppies should be dewormed with a broad-spectrum dewormer at least one time, irrespective of fecal sample results.
Heartworm prevention can start as early as 6 weeks of age, and should be given year-round. A dog’s first heartworm test should be done at their 1-year checkup.
Flea and tick preventatives can be given at 7-10 weeks of age, depending on the product. These should be applied monthly, year-round.
At the 1-year checkup, all dogs receive boosters of DHLPP, Lyme, Rabies, and Bordetella if needed. Fecal and heartworm tests should be performed annually as well.
